Amami Kurau's father is a chief scientist researching alternative energy. As an apology for having to work on her birthday, Kurau is invited to watch one of his experiments. When that experiment goes wrong, Kurau is possessed by a Rynax, an odd being made of light energy that lives in pairs. The Rynax informs Kurau's father that Kurau's body is necessary for she and her pair to recover. Kurau's father is desperate to have his daughter returned, promising to help the Rynax reawaken her pair.

Ten years after that event, Kurau and her father are living separately, with the possessed Kurau taking on dangerous jobs with the special abilities granted to her by the Rynax's powers, making a living as an 'agent'.

Just as her pair awakens and Kurau decides not to take on any more dangerous work, so as to live quietly with her pair, the GPO, a government police force, notices her existence and moves to capture and harness her and her pair's abilities...

Bakemonogatari centres on Araragi Koyomi, a third year high school student who is almost human again after briefly becoming a vampire. One day, a classmate named Senjougahara Hitagi, who infamously never talks to anyone, falls down the stairs into Koyomi's arms. He discovers that Hitagi weighs next to nothing, in defiance of physics. After being threatened by her, Koyomi offers her help, and introduces her to Oshino Meme, a middle-aged homeless man who helped him stop being a vampire.

In each chapter of the series, he encounters a different heroine, each involved with a different "apparition". The events of the previous chapters play an important role in the subsequent ones. The series primarily focuses on conversations between characters; it contains a fair number of parodies of other series, as well as Nisio Ishin's trademark wordplay and metahumour.

Kasumi Kogen, the so called Village of Mist, is a town located somewhere in a tasteful and rural place in Japan. In this town, there is a training school. Surprisingly, it is the Sinobi Gakuen, a training school of kunoichi, or the female ninja. It gathers competent students from all over Japan to train them to become kunoichi. Needless to say, the villagers are alumni of the school, and they run and jump, appear and disappear, as if the whole town were a big ninja house.

To this strange town, there came a girl and a man. The girl is Himawari who wants to be a ninja and respect “Ichikawa Raiso” as her master, and she came here to enter Shinobi Gakuen. The man is a new assigned teacher Marikoji Hayato. He was deceived into paying money and came here to repay his debts.

They encounter in this Village of Myst. Whether their encounter is by chance or inevitable? A teacher and his student. Forbidden Love? Other students like Azami, Skimi, Himeji, Yusu wait and see their situation secretly.

Whether can Himawari become a full-fledged Kunoichi?

When a human is marked to die, a faint gray line that is invisible to most appears around their neck. As time passes, that ring becomes darker and darker, until it is eventually black, and that person dies. Kita Michiru has an unusual gift, she possesses "Shinigami Eyes" which allow her to see these rings. When Michiru notices that two of the boys in her class, Akatsuki Chika and Tachibana Shito not only have rings, but that they're jet black, they reveal to her that the were supposed to die in a tragic accident six months ago. With the help of the Zombie Loan loan office, they were given a second chance at life, should they be able to pay for their debt by doing the work of Shinigami and killing malicious zombies. They petition Michiru to assist them in their efforts, and she finds her everyday life changing dramatically.
